Senior Acting Stream presents: Away

When Head of Acting Greg Friend went looking for the right play for his Senior Stream, he turned to the Australian canon. Michael Gow’s Away was the answer: three families navigating love, loss and forgiveness across the summer of 1967. “The challenge for our senior actors was to find nuance and depth with the older characters while still capturing the fun and torment in Gow’s beautifully crafted script,” says Friend.

The production brought that world to life in full. A seaside set with enormous drapes sweeping up from the stage like an ocean rolling into shore, costumes drawn from a department with more than 5,000 pieces, and classic 60s hits from Be My Baby to I Saw Her Standing There setting the scene between acts. “The actors loved working through the rehearsal process, making so many small discoveries along the way,” says Friend.
