Reading, experimenting, calculating, and taking a trip away
Year 5 has had a busy and rewarding term filled with learning, creativity and teamwork.
In English, students completed a novel and film study of Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot. They compared the book and film versions, explored characters and themes, and strengthened their comprehension and writing skills. Students also enjoyed weekly poetry, building confidence in reciting poems and using expression, rhythm and tone.
In Science, students learned about space, including planets, stars and space exploration, as well as inventions that have improved everyday life. In Creative Arts, they studied Vincent van Gogh and Piet Mondrian, then created their own artworks inspired by these artists. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing lessons with Miss Kuti, developing coordination, rhythm and confidence.
A highlight of the term was designing and building robots from recycled materials, which encouraged creativity, problem‑solving and sustainable thinking.
In Mathematics, students focused on three‑dimensional objects, identifying, describing and comparing different shapes through hands‑on activities.
One of the biggest highlights was the three‑day camp to Port Stephens with Year 6, where students enjoyed sand dunes, sandboarding, a dolphin cruise and a hike up Tomaree Head. This experience built teamwork, resilience and a sense of adventure.
Students also participated in The Resilience Project, learning about gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and emotional wellbeing.
