Principal’s Welcome
According to the messages of accolade from our first edition of Spectrum, I gather that this publication has been met with a warm reception from our community.
Grease was performed by the Musical Theatre Department and was an absolute highlight of the term. I congratulate Mrs. Dunbar and everyone involved in this vibrant production. It certainly brought back many memories of the 60’s and 70’s and transcended boundaries of the six decades since then.
Years 3, 5,7 and 9 sat for their NAPLAN examinations. One Year 9 class and the Year 5 class were excited to be chosen for filming by a TV crew preparing a segment on NAPLAN to be aired in August when the results are released.
We were fortunate to have the inspirational and humorous Belinda Downes speak at our College Assembly. Belinda is a linguistic expert who teaches teachers about the science of language at Newcastle University.
She spoke of challenges in life and as a person with a facial difference, she challenged us to recognise and confront common stereotypes associated with this difference. She pointed out to us that the “bad guy” in a movie or carton is often portrayed with a facial difference. She asked if that means she is a bad guy?
Throughout her schooling, Belinda said she ignored bullying and got on with life. “If somebody doesn’t accept you simply because of the way your face looks, that person has a problem that needs to be addressed, because they’re obviously missing out on knowing some great people.”
Staff and students were inspired by Belinda’s determination and zest for life. We look forward to hearing updates about her upcoming projects.
