Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All
It has been another exciting and engaging term in Science, with students participating in a range of activities that brought scientific concepts to life while encouraging curiosity, creativity and problem-solving.
One of the highlights of the term was our Year 10 excursion to Luna Park, where students explored the science behind amusement park rides. By investigating forces, motion, energy transfer and engineering design, students were able to make meaningful real-world connections between the concepts studied in class and the attractions they experienced firsthand. The excursion provided a valuable opportunity to see how science and technology are applied in everyday life.
Science Week was another standout event, centred on the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.” Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of lunchtime activities, including a seed-counting challenge, science puzzles, a paper aeroplane competition and sunflower seed planting. These activities encouraged students to think critically, work collaboratively and engage with science in a fun and accessible way.
A particular favourite during Science Week was the grass heads project undertaken by Years 7, 8 and 9. Students designed, created and cared for their own grass heads while investigating germination and plant growth. Through observing changes over time, students developed a deeper understanding of the conditions needed for successful germination, while also enjoying the creative aspects of the project.
One of the week’s biggest highlights was the spectacular Great Big Science Show presented by Kaleidoscope Science. Students were captivated by exciting demonstrations involving dry ice, elephant’s toothpaste and liquid nitrogen. The show sparked curiosity, inspired thoughtful questions and showcased the fascinating and sometimes surprising nature of science, leaving many students eager to learn more.
The term concluded with a memorable milestone for our Year 12 Chemistry students as they completed their final practical lesson. As part of the experience, students lit gun cotton, applying their understanding of chemical reactions in a dramatic and memorable demonstration. It was a fitting way to celebrate their hard work, commitment and achievements throughout their Chemistry studies.
Overall, the term has been filled with opportunities for students to develop their scientific knowledge through investigation, experimentation and real-world experiences. It has been wonderful to see students embrace challenges, ask thoughtful questions and engage enthusiastically with the many learning opportunities on offer. The enthusiasm displayed throughout the Luna Park excursion, Science Week and classroom practical activities reflects the vibrant culture of scientific inquiry that continues to thrive within our school community.
