Performing Arts meets English

Creativity in the Year 7 English classroom

In Year 7 English this term, we have been studying the challenges of navigating relationships and identity in Tim Winton’s play, Lockie Leonard. We have read and performed the play in class and discussed what it is like for an adolescent to grow up in Australia and experience new situations and emotions.

As part of their study, students were asked to extend a scene from the play and perform it to their classmates. In the lead-up to this task, students participated in drama workshops focusing on the use of body language and facial expression, and the creation of tableaux (or freeze frames) to capture significant moments. They were then encouraged to bring these performative elements to their own scenes exploring what it is like for teenagers in the modern world.
