A Leader on Pointe: Coco Rallies Flood Relief for Her Hometown

When devastating floods swept through Taree and surrounding towns in regional NSW, it was a moment of heartbreak for many. But for Coco, a boarder in the Classical Ballet Stream and School Captain at The McDonald College, it was also a moment to lead with compassion.

Determined to help her hometown and the dance community she grew up in, Coco launched a flood relief drive that inspired students, staff and families across the College. What followed was an extraordinary outpouring of support—donations of clothes, household items and funds flowed in to help those who had lost everything.

The McDonald College community responded quickly and generously, filling boxes with essential items and words of care. Every item was delivered to families affected by the floods, particularly those connected to the Andrea Rowsell Academy of Dance, where Coco began her ballet training.

In a moving letter of thanks, Andrea Rowsell wrote:

“I want to personally thank you for your kindness in reaching out to my students affected by the recent floods that took many families’ homes including their belongings. As we know, dancers are resilient, and with the assistance from generous people like all of you, these young dancers can day by day, piece by piece, pull their lives back together. Thank you to Coco for supporting her hometown and initiating this wonderful cause, endeavouring to help others in need.”

Coco also shared her own thanks in a message to the school:

“I can’t begin to find words to express my gratitude for your most generous donations. Every item will be donated to families from our studio and community.”

In leading this initiative, Coco supported her hometown during a time of great need and reminded the entire McDonald College community of the power of empathy and action.

This is what leadership looks like, this is what community feels like, and this is the heart of McDonald College.
