Discovering DNA through the Amgen Biotech Experience

This term, our Yr 10 science and Yr 12 Biology students embarked on an unforgettable journey into the world of biotechnology through the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE)—a hands-on program that brings real-world science into the classroom. What started as a series of lab activities quickly turned into a transformative experience that sparked curiosity, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the science shaping our future.

Stepping Into the Lab

From the moment our students donned their lab coats and gloves, the energy in the room shifted. With guidance from their teachers and support from ABE’s resources provided by The University of Sydney, they learned to:

  • Understand the principles of genetic engineering
  • Extract and analyse DNA fragments
  • Use micropipettes and gel electrophoresis to separate DNA and three different dyed molecules
  • Genetically transform bacteria by inserting a fluorescent gene from a sea anemone to make the bacteria glow

For many, it was their first time working with professional-grade lab equipment.
