Dance Showcase: Something Like An Opera

Something Like An Opera is an original dance production directed and choreographed by BJ Rorke, featuring the Dance Stream students across Years 7–12. Blending jazz, lyrical, contemporary and hip hop in a unique way, this production explores the boundaries of movement, music and storytelling to create a bold, immersive and thought-provoking experience.

Utilising the music from two albums Cosmic Opera I and Cosmic Opera II by Labrinth, the work takes audiences on a journey through a powerful musical landscape where contemporary sounds meet the grandeur and emotional intensity of opera. Beneath the production’s diverse musical influences lies an underlying operatic thread, weaving together themes that reflect the complexities of our world and the challenges facing society today.

Unconventional, ambitious and unapologetically different, Something Like An Opera is an exploration of what dance can become when genres collide and artistic expectations are challenged. It is a new creative direction for our dancers and audiences alike.

Something Like An Opera has a running time of approximately 50 minutes without intermission, and is suitable for audiences of all ages. Patrons are advised that theatrical haze will be used throughout this performance.
