Set in the exotic Indian world of myth and sacred gods, La Bayadère tells the story of the forbidden love between a royal prince and beautiful temple dancer, Solor and Nikiya.
The two become embroiled in a love triangle with Gamzatti, Solor’s arranged fiancé, who is then driven to murder Nikiya in a jealous rage. In a dream, Solor’s grief brings him to the heavenly realm of the Kingdom of the Shades, where he is united with his beloved Nikiya once again. The production was first presented by the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1877.
