Callback is the term used when artists auditioning for a role are called back to continue onto the next stage. In HSC Dance, the term is used when a performer’s work is considered of an exemplarily high standard. These works are then nominated for selection in a public showcase presentation at the Seymour Entertainment Centre in February of the following year.
This year, three students have been nominated for five works: Erin McLaughlin, Erica Mirarchi, and Jessica Vongphachan for Core Performance. Erin and Jessica have also been nominated for Major Study Performance.
Core Performance is a dance that Norman Hall (HSC Head of Dance ) creates for students to do individually. It is constructed to show a range of technical skills and performance qualities. In Major Performance, students choose to create their own dance, and Erin’s was based on a person overcoming a debilitating illness to slowly recover, allowing her to show a range of emotions in her interpretation. Jessica performed Three Seasons, showing the transition from Autumn through Winter to Spring to the delightful music of Michael Nyman from the score of the film The Piano.
Jessica is now studying at the Alvin Ailey Dance Centre in New York, and Erin is auditioning for a place in various dance courses throughout the country.
