'I love playing a bully': Actress Tiarnie Coupland reveals she liked portraying a 'mean person' in new film Back of the Net which is 'a cross between Bend It Like Beckham and Mean Girls'

She's starring as mean girl 'Edie' in the new feature film, Back of the Net, after years of playing Maggie on Love Child.  

And on Friday, actress Tiarnie Coupland said she relished playing an on-screen bully in the new Australian feature film.

Appearing on Channel Ten's The Project, the 22-year-old Logie-nominated actress said the role was 'more fun' than playing a 'nice' character.

Being quizzed by co-host Waleed Aly about the role, she said: 'I love playing the mean person or the bully.' 

She added that it is more fun than playing a nice character: It's such an amazing role to play, you get to explore so many more different fields.'    

The Australian-made film follows American teenager Cory Bailey (played by Sofia Wylie), who ends up at Harold Soccer Academy after catching the wrong bus.

In the fish-out-of-water dramatic comedy, Cory then needs to learn to play the game as she battles with the school's star player, Edie. 

The movie was filmed in Wollongong, with it co-starring fellow Australian actress Kate Box, who plays the film's only adult character. 

The film has been touted as a cross between much-loved 2002 hit film Bend It Like Beckham and 2004 cult teen film, Mean Girls.

On Saturday, Tiarnie said she could see the comparison with the UK film, while speaking to The Daily Telegraph's Confidential.

'It definitely has that vibe,' she said. 

Tiarnie explained that both films encouraged women to play the traditionally masculine sport of soccer.  

'Bend It Like Beckham encouraged women to play soccer and I feel Back of the Net will do the same for this generation,' she said. 

'It is great that the film is based around young women in sport, or playing sport.' 

Back of the Net is currently in cinemas.
