Performing Arts

The McDonald College is a specialist academic College with a core culture of Performing Arts.  It is registered and accredited with the NSW Board of Studies to offer courses for the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate.  Students participate in an extensive performing arts program within their school day, which is also offered after-school hours, to both College students as well as the broader community.

The College is unique in providing this performing arts program alongside a rigorous academic program.  Our dedicated staff are passionate and skilled in nurturing the students' potential.

The McDonald College was originally established to provide Classical Ballet dancers with an academic education that would offer more choices and opportunities for their future.  Classical Ballet students are often encouraged to leave school at a very young age.  The McDonald College has proven beyond doubt that it is possible to achieve the Higher School Certificate as well as advanced levels of Classical Ballet.

In the early days of the College it became apparent that there was a need for young performers to gain recognition for their talent as well as receiving professional training.  A Performing Arts Stream was developed which offered Dance, Acting and singing training.  This grew to become two Streams - an Acting Stream and a Dance Stream.  A Music Stream was added in 1995 with a program for contemporary and classical singers and instrumentalists.

All students from Preparatory to Year 2 enjoy classes in Music, Acting and Classical Dance or Junior Gym.  The program is generalist in nature and is aimed at giving young students a solid but entertaining introduction to the Performing Arts.

Junior students from Year 3 to Year 6 take part in an orchestral instrument program, acting or classical dance, jazz or sport.

From Year 7 students choose to specialise in one of the performing arts, for four days per week, with an elective day where they may gain experience in another area of performing arts.  Two hours each day is allocated to one of the streams of performing arts - Acting, Classical Ballet, Dance or Music. From Year 10 a fifth stream, Musical Theatre, is available.

In Years 11 and 12, students may choose 2 Unit Drama, 2 Unit Dance, 2 Unit Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension (when offered) as well as continuing their daily training in their chosen stream.  The final two years of schooling at the College is the equivalent of doing a full-time course in performing arts training.

Research strongly supports the theory that Performing Arts education enhances the learning of all students.  Students who participate in performing arts tend to become life-long learners, are more creative and more confident with strong self-esteem.

The College supports individual students in their desire to pursue their choice of careers.  It believes that all students should have the opportunity to succeed in both academic and performance areas.  The balanced and broad curriculum maintains flexible career pathways for the futures of all the students.  It endeavours to provide a variety of opportunities for individual development and growth.
