Rhys Wakefield (ex Student) nominated AFI Award
One of our ex Students Rhys Wakefield has been nominated for a both an AFI Award and an IF Film Award for his role in 2008 film The Black Baloon Directed by Elissa Down.
The McDonald College congratulates one of our successful ex Students Rhys Wakefield for his outstanding performance in The Black Baloon earning him nominations for both a 2008 AFI Award and an IF Film Award.
Rhys attended classes at the College from Year 4 Junior School in 1998 finishing in Year 12 2006. He won an acting scholarship in 2003.
As well as performing in a number of school productions he appeared in numerous Shakespeare festivals and has worked with Opera Australia and the Australian Ballet. in addition to attending the McDonald College he also attended an acting course at the Zenith Theatre in 2003.
He is best known for portraying Lucas Holden in the long running TV series Home and Away, a role he played from August 2005 until February 2008 and led to a Logie Nomination for the Best New Talent of 2006.
His portrayal of the main character Thomas in the 2008 film The Black Balloon has been highly acclaimed.
The Black Balloon, is a semi-autobiographical movie by first-time feature film director Elissa Down. A comic drama The Black Balloon has swept the Inside Film (IF) Awards nominations, with its stars Gemma Ward and Rhys Wakefield up for the top acting gongs and it has won 11 AFI nominations.
Its world premiere was at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany in February 2008, where the film received a Crystal Bear as the best feature-length film in the Generation 14plus category.
